TESSEL: German Skirmish mission by Bassmaniac
Hello!
I've promised a gift for Christmas.
I'm in late, but there it is!
I'm proud to present you my last skirmish mission: Tessel.
It's a little village situated at 20kms west of Caen (near Rauray and Brettevillette) were there were intensives fights in June 1944.
Here is the link to download (Edited version 21 feb 2012):
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?elr32q69swd5976
(Last version, with textures and sounds)
Thank's to DJSatane who had correct some mp bugs
This mission also include new skins like this one:

The map is very near of the real relief of Tessel but i've changed some houses to increase the gameplay.
You will discover some news ambiant sounds, that give the map a more immersive ambiance for this little farmland.
It's a heavy file for a mission, but i've include all my skins, and specially my news camos with bushes for all the German's tanks of this mission... he he
The context of this mission:
Operation Epsom: Since the liberation of Caen was taking serious delay, General Montgomery decides to launch the assault, and on June 23 he plans to use the forces commanded by General Richard O'Connor, three army corps: 60,000 men, 600 tanks and 700 guns.
This operation is codenamed Epsom. But on June 23, a new storm is raging in the Channel and reinforcements of food, fuel and materials are blocked on board ships or in England.
And if the allies are no longer able to move forward, the Germans are benefiting from this situation on the front line: the 12nd SS Panzer division of the 21st Panzer and the Panzer Lehr division move strategically around Caen .
In total, this number represents 228 tanks, 150 88mm cannons and different other guns. On Sunday June 25, 1944, an armored division and two independent armored brigades belonging to the 8th Anglo-Canadian corps, composed of nearly 60,000 men and 600 tanks, attack at the west of Caen.
The 49th British Infantry division West Riding attacks Fontenay-le-Pesnel, Tessel, Rauray and Brettevillette but in the surroundings, the Panzer Lehr defends the area, like the Rauray village, located southwest of Tilly, which is strongly defended by the 1st SS Armored Corps and the 12e Panzerdivision SS Hitlerjugend and heavy fighting begins for the control of the town... It was really a nightmare for the allies
I hope you will enjoy it and you can give me your comments and vote on the Poll if you like it!
Here is somes screens:

Cheers.

Awesome, thanks bassmaniac downloading now.....
After playing Tessel for a while I realized an important fact, enemy snipers are a bitch....
I will have to practice my anti sniper tactics a bit more because they decimated my forces..
The best tactic I have used is to move my targeted soldiers as soon as the sniper reticule appears on them, and continually move them to where I think the sniper is located...
Or use a lone soldier as bait to pin point the snipers location...
Thanks again, very enjoyable map/mission and a good challenge even on easy setting......
In my humble opinion this would have to be one of the best missions I have played for Assault Squad, the fact so much thought, effort and time has gone into it, it is obvious and a extra large map was a perfect choice to fit everything in.... all the extra skins and sounds make it a WW2 fan's dream come true...
Kudos to basmaniac and thanks for all the hard work.....Last edited by Mopar; 05-01-2012 at 23:45.

Really good ! This is so much better than the stock stuff. It's obvious that you paid great attention to detail and put a lot of effort into this. Different cow skins for eg.
Thanks for this.
Anyhow I've had a brief shot at it and am sure it will entertain for a long time to come.
I had a quick peak at it in the editor and would like to make some small suggestions about your unit selection for the Commonwealth side.
M114 - never used by the British. BL6 would be a good substitute.
Crusader - Never saw front line use in ETO
Cromwell - need to swap out for new model
Comet - Not introduced until September 1944
Sherman Jumbo - not in British service and later war machine anyway.
I suggest you bring the new Cromwell's & Churchill's into the mix.
Please see these as historical observations / suggestions and as constructive criticism rather than any slant on you fine effort.
A chance to play the allied side would be very welcomed also

Thank's for your support and this great UK tanks suggestions! (you're the first to signal it)
I have to say that i've checked it for German's (and i've hesited to use the Hetzer, that was never use on the Normandie front, even there is one Hetzer in the Bayeux museum) but i've totally forgot to check this point for UK! (was full of work on another side). I'll change this important and historical point for the next release (8 Armoured Brigade in this case):
http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=590
I've too release it to change others things:
- too much AA UK tanks at the begining, in hard mode,
- the minimap that is not exact and the sdkfz 251 have no damage skin..(thank's Azureka).
If you have suggestions to improve it or if you see little bugs, don't hesitate to write me, and thank's for your votes!
Cheers.

Very nice map, very nice new skins.
Thank you.
Only one small thing I noticed is that all german vehicles, which go to the right side, hanging at the first bridge,
and must be performed on the bridge by hand.
Very good work, as well Carpiquet Airfield.

Great job as usual! All i had to say was mentioned before. Maybe you can have a look on the river. I guess the tanks should sink if they try to cross the river but just the crewmen are leaving the vehicle. I really love the new skins for the germans.
Oh yeah!A chance to play the allied side would be very welcomed also
Thx a lotMors certa, Hore incerta

Thank's for your support
and i didn't remarked that you had edited your fisrt post..
I enjoy using my own sniper in game so i've scripted Ai snipers with a long range circle zone, and they return to theirs bases after some kills..
).
For my next mission (i've begined another map, Fontenay-le-Pesnel), i hope to use a special script for the Ai snipers (already started but not finished yet), with hidden positions and with randoms moves/actions like that: My wish is to have a Ai sniper that kills 3 ennemies at a certain distance and go back hidden in a #1 waypoint for a counter time, and then come back to gamezone and kills 3 otehrs ennemies and then go hidden to #2 waypoint and so on..
Regards.

The script for automatic resupplies (the crates) is a very nice idea, but very annoying at the same time as well.
Carpiquet had a better ballance in the speed.
You have enough time to remove stuff and change weapons for instance, before the backpack is full.
(on Carpiquet)
On this map Tessel (looks brilliant!!!) the speed is too fast. Remove some items and try to add a weapon from the crate. It doesn't work.
You get 3 items at once and you get ammo for the wrong weapons as well. (HMG ammo for an SMG troop etc.)
While on the subject of that particular script (auto-resupply). Lower the amount of healthpacks per soldier please.
You don't need more than 20 per soldier (at most). I normally re-equip my troops with just 2 or 3 stacks (stacks of 5)Last edited by Costarring; 27-12-2011 at 13:09.
