    Skinning help!

    Hey!

I've recently gotten into texturing, i'm trying to make a grey version of the opel blitz truck and an soldier, for the mod me and my team is making. The problem is when i do these skins, they lay wrong, look twisted and distorted. I have to know how to make this right, so please tell me people!

They must be placed the same way the original skin is, just repaint it.

    Re: Skinning help!

I remade the skin as you said, a friend tipped me that the option when you open the skin in photoshop shall be no. But now i got a new problem, the windows are covered and i can't see in.

    This Screenshot explains the new problem;

I have not drawed the black there on the windows, it cames up in the game. I can't see into the vehicle. Any ideas or help?

    Thanks in advance,

    Re: Skinning help!

You can't. because the glass object needs an alpha channel and a modulate lightmap setting. Glass objects in FOW usually have their own textures so that you can apply lightmap modulation. For examples check the texture\common\model path. Look for glass*.dds files and their respective mtl files in the entity folder for modulation settings or just choose a lightmap setting/texture in Max, export and see how it looks like. That's not necessary though, because you are repainting. Just don't touch the glass.mtl file in the Blitz folder.

P.S. It's black, because the UV-coordinates of the model and your texture are not aligned correctly. At least not in this picture.
As Instinct said. repaint the existing *.dds file.

    Hey cromtec!

I can't find the "glass.dds" file, but i can find the "glass.mtl" and "glass.ply". I haven't touched the glass.mtl in the Blitz folder.
I don't understand what you say about the UV-coordinates, could you explain it further? But the texture might not be aligned correctly. I can retry painting the Blitz again, and try not touch the windows in the skin.

I did open the blitz36#d file in PhotoShop and i choosed do not use existing mip maps, it said i must save it with "Use existing mip maps" in the save dialog, is that an problem maybe? And if so, do you know how to save in mip maps?

    Thanks for helping.

    Re: Skinning help!

Do you have the dds plugin for photoshop installed? When saving, a dialog pops up and you can select MIP options.
    If not, get it here:

I don't understand what you say about the UV-coordinates, could you explain it further?
If you used an existing textmod you should be fine. Anyway, it simply means, that the layout of the bitmap must be identical with the UV-layout of the 3d object for which the texture has been made. In order to do that, you usually export the UV-map as a bitmap either from the Max UV editor window or any other 3rd party UV editor. This exported bitmap is the base of your texture. You paint within the outlines of this bitmap and your texture fits on the model.

As I've said, you don't have to think about that if you use existing maps and only replace colors or add details.
    regards
