60mm mortars
Would they work in the game? I mean, they were so heavily used during the war, I am surprised they are not in the game. They were the go-to fire support on the platoon level, and seem perfect for the scale of Assault Squad.
So why not? I can see some issues, but all units can be balanced.

Personally, I would love to play a competitive mode based on infantry, medium tanks and mortars as main indirect fire support rather than all the rocket fireworks. Guitarist showed interesting possibilities for different mortars in the game in his mod, provided that you make a tactical room for them. In fact, if you look closely, the artillery in game works very much like a mortar: a single gun firing a quick fire mission.
But I think the people already see so much indirect fire in games that 60mm mortars wouldn't be special at all.

Agreed. There is so much arty already in the game and normal mortars are rarely used. I don't think there would be much benefit to adding small mortars.

But normal mortars are always being used in game.

A light mortar would work if the gameplay was based around 2v2 or similar sizes. Anything over 4v4 on standard 4v4 maps would cause them to be...useless fairly quickly.

I don't play online multiplayer so I can't comment on how/if it would effect gameplay there, however I do agree that light mortars have a decent part to play in platoon/infantry combat so should be included in the game.
The ultimate goal of my mortar mod is to include a light, medium and heavy mortar for all nations.
As the latest patch has provided me with a heavy mortar model, my update has been pushed back because I am copying it to make the 120mm mortar for every faction.
After that I resume hunting for suitable 3D models to make the 50/60mm mortars and their shells with.Last edited by Gepanzert Faust; 05-07-2012 at 09:03.

Personally, I think that mortars should be used a whole lot more. I only see them once every few games, in both MoW and MoWAS. I mean, one regular 80mm mortar has the same cost as a light tank for god's sake. And it lobs a hand grenade, basically. I think the regular mortar should be powered up some and a light mortar, if added, have slightly less power than a hand grenade.

It doesn't. I suppose the problem with a light mortar is that you will have to decide the strength and range of the new mortar along with an appropriate price cost. I suppose a strength equivalent to the rifle grenade would be about right.
