Hi guys,

I really like the sounds used in Assault Squad, however I was annoyed at how the acceleration engine sounds used for a vehicle (or tank) tended to obviously loop under certain circumstances such as going up a steep hill, reversing or turning on the spot. It sounds cheesy hearing a sound that wasn't recorded for looping in mind as the acceleration sounds clearly weren't, so I've made a small mod that stops the game from endlessly looping the acceleration sound during a continuous movement.

Some of you might not understand what I'm talking about. Load up a skirmish game or multiplayer game and spawn a tank (Sherman is a good example). Turn on the spot or drive up a steep hill. Notice that obvious looping roar, my mod will stop it from continuously playing (it will only play once while you hold down a movement key) so you can hear the engine and tracks properly.

There are some other strange sounds I've noticed in the game such as the sound used for some wheeled vehicles that's supposed to be the sound of the vehicle moving over ground but instead it sounds like a strange squealing sound. I've noticed it on the Daimler and Sdkfz 223 and other wheeled vehicles probably have it too. I'm trying to see if I can find a replacement sound to use instead and include it as future update to the mod. I'll probably fix up other sounds too that I come across that I find don't fit the game.

Not sure if the mod is multiplayer compatible. It uses Assault Squad's mod folder system, you simply activate it from the mods tab in the Options menu after placing unzipped mod folder in the mods folder where you installed Men of War Assault Squad.

Anyways here's a download link for the mod, let me know what you think:

Yepp, this is a long lived feature which isn't the best of this game. It's nice that you did something but it doesn't seem to work in MP unless everyone else also has it.

But it sounds better.

The original resource file with sounds (sound.pak) can be changed in any way you want - it won't cause desyncs and anything like it. So you can directly mod that instead. That means you will have superior sounds to others, while they stick to the original ones - with no desyncs.

For example, my MoW sound folder maybe has but a pair of the original sounds, and it's truely a symphony to the ears.

Good luck with this.

Awesome! Will try it out tonight!

I have my old mod that needs to be tweaked for MoW:AS but was originally for MoW...
it added completely new tank explosion sounds (instead of the same one over and over)
and also new grenade sounds etc. for dopplar range effects. We should join forces...

Ok looking at the archive... you changed the gamelogic.pak and vehicle.inc ... I think
this might cause desynch.... but honestly.. this is something that the devs might want to consider
adding to the next patch. :beer2:

How do you even open any of these .pak files...

any winzip or zip

I was thinking of copying some sounds files from GSM mod I have on my Men of War and replacing some sounds in MoW AS.

However, the MoWAS Sound files are zipped (non-extracted), do you think I can just unzip them and it won't cause problems.

That way it would be alot easier to just copy and replace sound files back and forth.

Yeah should be fine.... try it and see... should be pretty easy to check out. :)

If I were you I would get permission to use those sounds from the makers of the GSM mod first...
it is good to ask permission for to use other peoples mods and also give them credit if you use
them (in your mod). ;)

Well I wasn't thinking of doing any mods....just replacing my own....but if I unzip the sound folder could I "zip" it again?

Yeah I did have to edit the code that handles vehicle sounds so it might not work properly online unless everyone has it. It is so much better when it does not loop endlessly. It was such an easy edit too once I found the right file. The only other way around it would be to change all the acceleration sound files to longer, more easily looped versions which would take alot of work.

Hopefully if enough people think it is an improvement it might be changed in the game officially so a mod isn't needed. :)

Thanks for the letting me know that a modded sound.pak file can be used without desync issues. I'm guessing you can edit texture files as well with no issues. In the future if I was to release new sounds I would include them in a separate mod for easy online use. I've done a fair bit of modding (especially sounds) before for World in Conflict, I'd like to get back into it for Assault Squad since its pretty mod friendly.

You can edit sound files without any problems, but no set., inc. reg. def. files etc.
I will try it out and if pleasing, I'll add it to patch 2, thanks!

Thanks for the info Instinct, and thanks for trying out my mod. Hope you think its an improvement (especially since it was such a small code change). I'm just pleased I was able to make the mod available for myself and others who think my change may be an improvement. That said I also would be happily surprised if it was added in the patch. :realbig:

As I mentioned before the improvement is most noticeable with the tanks (since the looping happens while a tank tries to climb to its top speed or turns on the spot).

Is your mod supposed to show up under 'Mods' (that you enable and disable)?

I have it in the folder like my other mods but it doesn't show under mods in game...

?

My mod has a mod.info file and I have it setup correctly so it shows up in the Mod menu in the game. Check the filepath. I have the zip file setup so you just simply extract the contents of the folder into the Mods directory, don't let your zip unpacking program create any additional folders when unpacking.

The filepath should look like "\1C Company\Men of War. Assault Squad\mods\phaze sound mod", and inside that folder there should be the resource folder, mod.info file and the readme.txt file.

Hey guys this mod will become obsolete when patch 1.85.3 is released. Looks like Instinct approved of the change and it will be made apart of the patch.

I am still interested in making some modded sounds for the game but I am waiting for some free time to sit down and look for sound samples and run them through a sound editor. Please feel free to let me know which sounds in particular you wished were changed, and if you have any examples in the form of a video of sounds you'd like to see in the game please link them. :)
