View Full Version : Add Spectator Slots?

I think it'd be great to have a third team for spectators, who could watch the match but not communicate with the players.
What do you think?
I've wanted to spectate a few times before, such as during a LAN event where I just felt like a break and watching some others in a game.
That said, it's probably another thing all down to how much time/effort it takes to do it, such as back with people wanting replays. It's not exactly first priority versus making the gameplay and units themselves better.
Would rather have replays.
Spectator would not be hard to implet,teoricaly its just a player with no fog of war and no unit...

That's what I was thinking.

If they ever add replays I will fly over to where ever the hell it is instinct lives and kiss him on the mouth.
Spec slots would be nice, the more polish this games gets the better.

To be honest, having a spectator would just be a player too much for the most part. My -pessimistic- way of seeing it, is that you will simply have one unnecessary player in that will possibly drag down the performance for the game at large if he happens to have a poor computer.
However, I wouldn't have any problem with the option, but I would think of it as waste of time if it is too complicated to implement, especially when the suggestion of adding replays is better.

Apparently it's overly complicated, and can't be done.

How could it be?
if player() action_playerslot1
add player() player_group spectators
player() hasvision_team1 = true
player () hasvision team2 = true
player () faction = false
...aaand done?

This does not fill me with confidence, if they can't do this due to limitations of the game then I can't Imagine a lot of the things I would want to see getting into the game.
- Replays
- Better lobby with more functionality
- Matchmaking
They can add more content all they want and perfectly balance the game but without replays and a solid lobby/matchmaking system it won't do the game justice.
Has there been any confirmation one way or another regarding the inclusion of replays and a revamped lobby?
If it's never going to happen then I would like to know now.

This. Replays would do a lot, especially to the community of new guys. The value for players who want to play competitively is self explanatory.

I wouldn't have TOO little confidence. This is, afterall an Indie developer, so no, it doesn't make sense for them to fix what isn't really broken. That said, with the running 'machine' they have, there's always an opportunity to add functionality or tune up performance.
Things that make no sense to ask for are things like a totally revovated lobby -- it's not really needed, or a high-functioning replay system -- we don't need bells and whistles.
Things that DO make sense to ask for are: a lobby with a useful friends function, allowing you to easily chat with and join games your friends are in. A matchmaking lobby with more choices in order to make matchmaking games more popular. Also, a replay system would be great, even if it's bare bones without fast forward, rewind, or the like. However, if that can't be done, surely spectator slots would be an easy second option?
Cheers!
