ok i don't know if many people know how to do this but i found a good way to do it and it's simple
with some screens

this works with any jpeg pic edited or not but you might not get the result you where thinking of there is one funny one i did below and the bottom

ok first get a pic of a map you wont to put into MOW

i did a map of the world

http://i39.tinypic.com/20k82th.gif

then go into photo shop or image editing program of choice
and turn the land mass's you wont to show up as white and empty space as black and save as jpeg
and save in your mow map folder so you can find it when your in the editor

when in the editor go to heights import height map find your pic that you changed and save in your mow map folder and there you go also i put the max height in meters as 5 and zero height as 0 but you can change the setting any way you like it's just what i used

Cool feature.

This could be used to make more "real" maps. :D

Was wondering, what does the "height map level" option do, it can be set from that dropdown menu. Thanks.

You can also use this two merge two or more maps together.

1. Export a heightmap of the source map
2. Export a heightmap of the destination map
3. Use graphic software to combine the two into one larger image and save it.
4. Import the heightmap.

The one thing to worry about here is that there is a limit to how large in width/height the image can be. I do not know the exact size at which it fails, but if a map is over 1000x1000 odds are you are going to be unable to import a heightmap of it.

Hi all, I have a question regarding the heightmap importer. I am trying to import a heightmap into a map but its coming out very low - ie its flattening the map to such a degree as to be useful only as a template. Even after subsequently exporting this flattened map, in photoshop the heightmap is far less defined (dark to light) its like its averaging my map out upon import.

Can anyone give my any pointers on settings and wotnot that might help with my flattening problem?

EDIT: I found the answer to my problem, it was an utter noob mistake, I wasn't pressing enter to fix the value after I was changing it in the max height (meters) value..

And bosnian dragon, check out these two threads for how to convert google maps into grayscale heightmaps:

The one thing to worry about here is that there is a limit to how large in width/height the image can be. I do not know the exact size at which it fails, but if a map is over 1000x1000 odds are you are going to be unable to import a heightmap of it.

If you have for example a 500x500 map it will import any sized heightmap image, but resize the image in the same way as photoshop etc resizing the 'image size' - not like resizing using 'canvas size'.

This works for any sized image so if you had a 1000x500 heightmap image it would be squashed up in a 500x500 map but still start and end at the same point.

I tested this using a 1200x1200 map generated in the editor, importing heightmap images of various sizes, and then again on an even bigger one (1917x1650 - was adding polygons to get it this big) and while it resizes your heightmap images to the current map size it will happily import.

Still won't do it for large maps.

I can directly export a map from the gem editor and try importing that same unedited file and it will crash saying it is too big.
