When I tried to reinstall FoW, on the second disk I got a "cyclic redundancy error"
Does it involve a scratch on the disk, and if so, do I have to buy the game again just for the second install disk?

I've read somewhere that "cyclic redundancy error" in most cases can mean just two things. Damaged hard drive or damaged CD/DVD...

Try another DVD drive.
Or try to create an image of the disc on your HD, mount it and install the game from the virtual drive.

The virtual image variant is not working for original discs...only for other ones; cause you will instal the game, but you will can not start it.

One problem at time. We must solve the installation problem first. Once upon the game is installed succesfull, AnEvilGuy have to uninstall/unactive the virtual drive (due to the SecuRom protection). Try to insert the original FoW disc in the dvd drive and launch the game... maybe the DVD check would work now...
If not, he must buy a new FoW copy.
