View Full Version : Why do we still play this game?

That may sound like a stupid question but I am curious.

Soldiers is my favourite game ever and I play it because I was disappointed with FoW - although I was not very patient with it and should maybe give it another try; especially with some mods that may improve the SP game (I don't do MP).

But I see modders and other contributors active both in Soldiers and FoW so I was wondering why that is. FoW is probably prettier so why do people still play Soldiers, and especially why still make mods for it (but please don't stop!)...?

Simple answer. SHOWWII is wayyy better than FoW :D and I enjoy creating stuff

Being a long time gamer for 30 years + I've seen and played just about any type of game there is. I just don't like games that look and play like some crappy arcade game console version anymore which is why FoW was sorely disappointing to me http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s108/MadCatOmni/Soldiers%20emoticons/soldier_cry.gif. I usually expect a game sequel to be an improvement in some way over its predecessor but for me at least that didn't happen. My interest in it lasted just long enough to finish the entire SP mission set and then I gave it to a neighbor's kid. He also has S-HoWWII and he didn't even finish playing one mission set before chucking it.

The developers of FoW did not pay attention to the gamers' original suggestions in the Codemasters forums apparently and instead implemented a whole new look and feel to the game that actually made it look and play in an arcadelike fashion http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s108/MadCatOmni/Soldiers%20emoticons/soldier_razz.gif. If they had bothered to poll the gamers who would be playing it beforehand or better yet, thrown some demos out under different names to see the gamers' responses they might have stepped back from FoW and put out a decent sequel. Noone really expected them to screw it up so badly with the sequel since the original game just needed some minor tweaking and a few extra added features and items.

I don't know about actual sales but if the forum memberships are any indication the original game was much more popular in the same amount of time after initial release. The near non-existant advertising for the original kept sales in western Europe and abroad far below what could actually have been achieved by the game. I read the gamers' mags and watch the G4 gaming shows with interest in hopes of games like S-HoWWII. I read not one article or flyer mentioning Soldiers-HoWWII. I had to find it in a bargain bin awaiting yet another markdown from the $5(U.S.) I paid for it. The best $5 I've spent on any game, ever http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s108/MadCatOmni/Soldiers%20emoticons/soldier_smile.gif.

That, of course, is just my opinion and it probably ticks off the developers of FoW. I just calls 'em as I sees 'em though for what 30+ years of gaming experience is worth.

Well i've been gaming for about 15yrs and spent all that time searching for the ultimate war game both FPS and strategy games and was never entirely satisfied because it always ends up that you have only one real path to take to win so it's just a matter of time till you find the path, but with Showw2 it combines all the features of FPS games with direct control and the inventory , it also allows you to think of a strategy of how best to achieve your objective through many different angles. The realism is great especially when you play the harder levels like if you take a shot upper body your history so you gotta be careful and the way the enemy react as you would expect them to if you entered a german base. I never bought FOW probably because of the reports it got here and by the sound of it i don't think i would like it so we'll just keep modding this game.
I'm relatively new to this game, because i don't read gaming press i never heard of it until like mad cat found it in a bargain bin and was surprised to find such interest in it 4yrs after it came out and that's where all of you guys need a big thankyou :toast: for modding for the game and keeping it alive in fact i've spent more time the last 2 months both gathering 50+ mods expansion or what ! and learning how to use the editor than actually playing the game.

The main advantage of FoW over Soldiers was that FoW had hull MGs... I prefer Soldiers for having battles in though.

well , BTRH 1.31 and DE 3.9 and other mods add Hull MG for most tanks....

Albus, I have seen these features in mods and they are great - but they are only MP mods, correct?

I have tried playing some of them SP but because of the changed damage models missions such as Monastery are impossible as the guy you are supposed to meet up with and save is dead within seconds!

Not correct, this features are in the vehicles, then if you use a vehicle with Hull MG work in SP missions. :grandpa:
But from BTRH 1.4x single player mode are blocked or hidden.... ( can be unlocked  )

I know that bug, is fixed in BTRH 1.6B.

I don't play SHoWW2 anymore and I hardly browse this section of the forums but as an 'old' Soldiers player and modder I couldn't resist posting in here.

When I first played the demo that I installed from a local gaming mag CD, I was amazed, the Officer bonus mission was the best WW2 tactics experience I've ever had, back then. I knew I had to get the game, but I couldn't find it in Croatia. In the end, after a year or more of searching for it I got some friends from the Netherlands to buy it for me and send it over. It was so worth the wait.
I spent 2 years playing and modding Soldiers and I don't regret it at all. I've gained a lot of experience from that and now that I've modded FoW, I would dare to say that my modded version plays even better than Soldiers!
My Stalingrad mission for FoW should be released soon, with the new mod, so you should probably try it, if you can still believe that FoW can be fun and realistic. (shameless plug :) )

Anyways, it's nice to some of the old faces from the old Codemasters board here (Instinct, Mad Cat, Dilust... ).
Peace out guys,
and let's hope that MoW will not be such a letdown.

When Albus mod will be released I think you will change your mind. Me too i'm playing no more soldiers, cause I have played all mods.
But when I will have Albus mod installed on my PC, I will find again the pleasure of playing soldiers. :)

This autumn MOW will be released. A lot of new construction elements for use in a map: desert houses, cranes, hangars, warehouses, anti_tank and anti_infantry obstacles, towers, new trees and bushes; a lot of new guns and vehicles........and other more.

Now I am asking how many from us, that are still modding soldiers will be tempted to tranzit to MOW?

Dilust

In MOW there will be some Italian stuff and the temptation is great for me.....
But I should say that SHoWW2 is the best game I ever played, so maybe I will continue working on it... when my PC will come back from the dead land...
